TOPIC: THE WORKSHOP OF THE MIND
TEXT: PROVERBS 23:7, PROVERBS 4:23, JAMES 1:8
Workshop can be defined as a room where work and manufacturing activity takes place. While the mind houses our thoughts, will and emotions. The brain is the physical location of the mind; According to neurologist research, they found out that the brain is made up of 600 billion cells and is more efficient and complex than the modern day human computer. Among all the organs of the body, the brain is the most complex and it is not transplantable from one human being to another. This illustration made above is to describe to us, how powerful our mind (brain) is. Our brain carries out function of the mind and out of the heart (mind) come the issues of life. King Solomon said we should guide it with all diligence. “Your mind is a key agency in producing your reality”. What are you feeding it with? What is feeding on it? Look around your life right now, everything you see in it is the direct outcome of the workshop of your mind.
For better understanding of this message, we shall consider the following sub-headings:
POINT 1: THE MIND EXPLAINED AND IT’S CAPACITY TO DETERMINE YOUR LIFE
The mind is where the thinking process takes place and it’s so powerful that our mind affects our life. No wonder our lord Jesus Christ was so concerned about what his disciples was thinking (Luke.5:22, Proverb 4:23, Matthew 15:17 - 20). Our mind is beyond a tool, but it is a workshop that fashions what eventually become our realities in all ramifications of human existence. As a matter of fact; “You are what you think”. “Garbage in – Garbage out” is a computer jargon that illustrates the mind, the human brain (mind) is like a computer, thoughts/feelings are like software and words in different formats (music, movies, books, conversations, pictures, sounds etc) are programming language.
So, seeing how important the mind is, to who or what we become and what we accomplish, it’s only wise for every young person/ adult in this programme to consciously pay attention to this all important “Life’s workshop called the Mind”. Despite the capacity to dictate the tone and rhythm of a man’s life, the mind remains neutral as a workshop and is dependent on what comes into it (workshop) and the interpretations that affect the outcome of one’s life. The question you should ask yourself now is what is going in the workshop of my mind. The mind is the centre of man’s life, so if you think that you are a failure then you remain a failure, if you allow fear to dominate your mind, then you will be tormented because out of your mind are the issues of life. In today’s programme, “God’s Qualities For A Blessed Youth”, the Lord wants to renew your mind and put positive thought in your mind, so you can have positive results in life Eph. 4:22-23, Romans 12:2. Faith comes from the mind, when you are double minded or negative minded you will be defeated in the battle of life James 1:6-8.
The twelve spies that were sent to spy the Amalekite had a negative mindset except Joshua and Caleb. And it made the remaining ten not to enter the promise land except Joshua and Caleb Number 13:27-33. This example above is to prove to us that the activities going on in the workshop of the mind is capable of making you a failure or success.
POINT 2: THE DEFEATED LIFE OF AN UNNURTURED AND CONTAMINATED MIND
“The quality of your thought has a direct correlation with the quality of your life”. Negative, unstable and corrupt thought is a major problem among the youths and these thoughts halt their growth and success in all area of life. Proverbs 23:7a. Your mind is the manufacturer of what you do in life and the result you get, the content of your mind is the context of your life. Therefore, you must guard it with all diligence; the mind of so many youth has been infected with negative and corrupt thought, they don’t think or see themselves as a success, they think failure, inferiority, problems, limitations and all kind of disempowering thoughts etc. Others have given their minds over to corruption, they only think about sex, boyfriends and girlfriends, pornography, immorality, stealing, cheating, shortcuts, easy life and all kind of lust. These thoughts over time begin to form the reality of their life. Many are in abject poverty, into various forms of addiction, perpetual failures, laziness and bad repetitions, tormenting fear, delay as a result of inaction or wrong attitude, lack of focus, waste, extremism, aimlessness, loneliness and lack of productivity, crime, brokenness, and mental, emotional and spiritual bondage. Every outcome you see in your life today is as a result of the things you gave access to your mind, which the mind reproduced as evident in your life, For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he Titus 1:15. A corrupt and negative mind will produce a corrupt and negative life Matthew 12:35, Matthew 15:18-19. So, you need to ask yourself today, what are the thought going on in the workshop of my mind? Is there any corrupt programme running in the C.P.U of my life? Then pray to the Lord, today to work on your mind.
POINT 3: PROGRAMMING YOUR MIND FOR GREATNESS, OUR EXPECTED RESPONSE AND BENEFIT
Psalm 119: 130,105, John 8:12, 6:63, Romans 12:2, 2Corinthians 3:18
Words in their various formats (music, books, movies, voices etc) are the device that programme our thoughts and our thoughts processes, produces our realities. Many youth don’t receive from God or achieve success in life because of their thought process James 1:6-8. No wonder king Solomon counseled that we should guard our heart (mind and brain) with all diligence Proverbs 4:23. This means that the heart has a passage way, which we must guard. The passage way to your heart are your senses e.g. eye, ear, skin etc. What you hear and see corrupt your mind and life Job 31:1, Psalm 101:3. You should be careful of what you see and hear, among your friends and peer group. Never listen to the words failure, if not, you will soon begin to think like a failure 1Corinthians 15:33, Psalm 51:8.
For you to ensure positive thought in your mind, you have to act on the following daily:
~ Read and meditate on the word of God, Philippians 4:8, and Psalm 119:9.
~ Be careful of what you see Psalm 101:3.
~ Be careful of evil communication 1Corinthians 15:33.
~ Fill your heart with the promises of God Joshua 1:8.
~ Pray daily to guard your heart spiritually 1Thess. 5:17.
So, as we do so, we shall have a positive and holy thought going on in the workshop of our mind which produce a blessed life Philippians 4:7, 2Timothy 1:7, James 4:8.)
