TEXT: Matt. 26:41, Luke 18:1
THEME: SPIRITUAL EXERCISES: NECESSITY FOR NOURISHMENT
MEMORISE: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. (Matthew 17:21)
MESSAGE:
It will be extremely difficult to stay nourished without engaging in spiritual exercises. Staying nourished implies living healthy spiritual lives. This can be achieved when one engages in prayer, fasting and reading of the word of God.
All the above provide the nourishment needed to stay focused and live according to the will of God. More so, we must follow the example of our Saviour Jesus Christ who during His earthly ministry, was faced with diverse situations and yet triumphed over them all.
A significant aspect of His lifestyle was prayer and fasting. For continuing in prayer, the power of the flesh was subdued, which was crucial in His fulfilment of His earthly ministry most excellently.
Prayer and fasting makes for spiritual nourishment and by their application in your life, you are most likely to remain an over-comer. Jesus Christ our Lord showed us the way to a victorious Christian life through regular fasting and prayer.
Fasting and prayer are spiritual procedures which make the partakers to be very sensitive to the things of the spirit. Whoever continues in them becomes connected to the spirit of God and the flesh is greatly subdued. Prayer and fasting must however not be done in sin, since sin hinders prayer. No amount of prayer and fasting in sin can make you spiritually alive.
Therefore, you must avoid unrighteousness to create a balanced spiritual life. When anyone falls short of this divine instruction, he/she allows the flesh to become active, and the spirit malnourished. Such person becomes weak spiritually and therefore, sleeps anyhow, eats or speaks anyhow, becomes engrossed with earthly pleasures and experience nightmares, etc.
In the time of temptation, such person succumbs to sin. Christ's disciples slept instead when they were supposed to be praying and watching and when temptation came, they all fled from Christ.
Worship/praise God and then take the following prayer points:
1. Every power attacking my spiritual life; in the name of Jesus I rebuke you.
2. O Lord, rekindle my prayer life, give me grace for fasting and make me to be alive in the spirit always, in Jesus’name.
3. Father, release extra-ordinary grace and power for prayer, fasting, reading the word of God and writing messages upon our G. O, in Jesus' name.
