THE CHOSEN DAILY DEVOTIONAL…THEME: NEVER GIVE UP

THE CHOSEN DAILY DEVOTIONAL…

DATE: Wednesday, October 11th, 2017.

TEXT: 1 King 19: 1-16

THEME: NEVER GIVE UP

MEMORISE: For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16)

MESSAGE:

Everybody has a God given assignment. For example, Adam's assignment was to tend the garden, while Noah's was to build the ark and save a portion of humanity. God is always faithful to those that are faithful in fulfilling their assignments and as long as you remain faithful and do not stray, you will be rewarded. In today's reading we can learn an important lesson from a great man of God, Elijah. He was a very powerful man of God who did great exploits. He prayed and rain did not fall for three and half years in Israel. He challenged Kings.

His most remarkable feat was when he challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to prove whose God was the true and living God. In the process, he called down fire from heaven. After he won the contest, he had all the fake prophets put to death! That took courage and strong faith in God and God did not let him down.

It is therefore very surprising what happened next when he was told that Jezebel was after him to avenge the deaths of the Baal prophets he had killed. His faith and courage suddenly disappeared and fear overtook him and he ran away! A man who challenged 450 prophets of Baal, running away from the threat of a woman! A man that prayed for rain not to fall for over 3 years and prayed fire from heaven suddenly lost faith and allowed fear to overcome him. He suddenly forgot that the God that sent down fire could also deal with Jezebel. Instead, he allowed fear to make him abandon his place of assignment.

Not only that, he also asked God to take his life because he was tired. When God finally appeared to him, He asked him 'what doest thou here?'. That is a very loaded question that we must consider carefully. The question suggests that Elijah was not at his place of assignment. What God did afterwards shows that He is not pleased when we don't face our challenges and abandon ship. He asked him to go and anoint Elisha to take His place. Indirectly, God removed Elijah from office and replaced him with Elisha! Yes. If Elijah had stayed to battle Jezebel, it is possible he still would have had many more years of service to God. While it is true he was still rewarded for his efforts as he did not see death, his end could have been more glorious if he had stayed in his place of assignment. Never abandon your duty post.

Worship/praise God and then take the following prayer points:

1. God, give me the grace to remain faithful to my calling, in Jesus' name.

2. I bind every spirit of discouragement and intimidation that has been assigned to bring down my G. O, Mummy in the Lord and their children. I cast them into the abyss in Jesus' name.
